Had a guest check in yesterday, at 6:30PM Airbnb support calls and says they are complaining about the air freshener smell and they are getting a headache and want a full refund. We do have a febreeze plug in set on low, never had it mentioned in 1.5 years. My baby is screaming and I have food on the stove so I say I can't talk and get off the call before committing to anything with support. Get a message a minute later from the guests saying they are going to dinner but were finding the air freshener smell strong… nothing about leaving or requesting a refund. I apologize and suggest they unplug it and leave it outside and leave the windows open while they are gone. Then they send another message saying the want to offer 2 options, 1 they can leave with a full refund or 2: "no refund is considered and unfortunately we will have to leave this as an honest concern in our review post stay". I just responded that unfortunately I can't provide a refund based on my policy, I have offered a reasonable solution and am sure the unit will be aired out when they return. Am I being unreasonable here?

I'm genuinely surprised that this is your first complaint about an air freshener. A lot of people hate them. The smell is often strong enough to give some folks headaches, and it gives the impression that you're trying to cover up other smells.

Ditch the Frebreeze plug-in and if there are smells, address the underlying causes or got an ozone machine.

It's not a good idea to use air fresheners. Some people are sensitive to strong odors. Give a full refund. You basically hung up on support when they were trying to help the guest resolve the issue. Not a good look.

Don’t use plug-ins . If you clean well you shouldn’t need artificial scents . If you have cooking odors or pet smells , open windows and run the hvac fan. If you want a scent, at moist I suggest using diffusers with essential oils...those aren’t as obnoxious as the artificial scents.

Nothing smells as good as CLEAN. Spend your time and money on making sure everything is clean and well-aired. Some sources of odor are: old carpets, wooden furniture that hasn’t been kept polished, furniture upholstery, kitchen surfaces other than basic countertops, kitchen hot pads (which never seem to get washed!), shower curtains, what else?

The way to bad reviews is paved with air fresheners. Think 1-3 stars. Just search for "air freshener" in these forums..

Have you seen what the stuff in those Glade fresheners will do it to something that touches? I will eat through wood carpet plastic anything! It completely destroyed my desk at work.

There is no way that is good to be breathing in. I have parrots, and that is one of the main things that will kill them. If it can kill a 6 pound bird, I surely wouldn’t want it around my kids.

As a guest, this is a huge problem for me. The plug-ins are absolutely toxic, but at least you can unplug them and stash them away somewhere. If the linens are heavily scented, though? That will ruin a stay for me.

Air fresheners are horrible. You do you, but whatever chemicals are in those things make me unable to breathe. If I was your guest, I would be asking for a full refund.
