Airbnb hosts and experiences - tjs127 - 01-04-2026
New Airbnb host and I read about the Airbnb “Experiences”. How many other Airbnb hosts are using this feature and what type of experiences are you guys offering? We are in the South and we like to smoke meat. People always get a kick when I do barbacoa dinner. I smoke a cow head and then pull it out of the smoker and shred the meat and have the sides prepared ahead of time and people serve themselves. Most of the experiences I see seem to be excursions of some type .. I figure serving food may also be somewhat of a liability.

I have done a few Airbnb experiences over the years and the ones that are unique to a specific location are the ones that are the most appealing. It sounds like the experience you are thinking of offering would fit that description nicely as we don't have that sort of cuisine out here in the PNW.

I thought experiences was a failure and they ended it. I actually never even bothered click on the tab in the menu since I read about it. Did they bring it back?

Have you read the new experiences guidelines for hosts since they updated it a few months ago? I was interested at first but it looks like there are so many guidelines and way more hoops to jump through then what we need to do to list a property. For example, if you want to provide food, it says you need to following criteria:
"A minimum of 2 years of experience in the relevant category or 5 years for chefs without a culinary degree". There are also guidelines on how many pictures to provide and insurnace. Source: https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1451
The funny thing is when we list our property, they barely check any licenses, certifications, insurance or anything like that. I think i'll stick to being an Airbnb host and make some "passive" income.

If you are an airbnb host, I would stick to one thing and that is hosting a property. Do you want your guests to leave you a bad review on your property because they may have not been satisfied with the food? Cooking for guests also seems like a big liability, like you've already mentioned yourself.

After reading through these guidelines I think i'll stick to just being an Airbnb host. Definetly not worth the time and risk.. I can see why it never really took off.

I am in active group of local airbnb hosts and investors (all successful, many years in the business) and not a single one of us bothers with experiences or even gives it any thought. It's more of a gimmick for Airbnb itself and provides little to no value to our properties. If anything, it adds the potential for more risks and unhappy guests if they start adding on services and experiences through airbnb and end up with a bad "experience". (pun intended)

When we travelled to Europe we did use experiences (totally separate from our stay at a hotel) and we thought it was very unique and great. The experiences/tours offered were much more intimate and interesting than what we saw on Tripadvisor/Viator. I can't speak as to being an experiences host however.
